Message transcript:

Hi everyone, it’s Jeff and I wanted to send you a bonus audio related to American Thanksgiving and all the Black Friday sales. Next month, we’ll do a full lesson on the history of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But first, the big news. We are running a Black Friday special for Plain English Plus+ and those offers are available now! If you’re a free member or if you’re on our e-mail list, you already got the news. Check that e-mail for all the details.

If—somehow—and I don’t know how this is possible—but if you’re not on our e-mail list and if you’re not a free member, then head to PlainEnglish.com and click the Black Friday banner at the top of the page .

There are two great offers, two great ways you can get started with Plain English Plus+ this Black Friday and build the confidence in English that you’ll need going into 2021. All the details are at PlainEnglish.com. You can also find a link in the description of this episode in Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or whatever podcast player you use.

The week after next, we’ll do two lessons on holiday shopping. They’re light-hearted lessons, more about my own personal memory than anything else. I needed a break from researching serious topics, so these two lessons, on December 7 and December 10, will be about holiday shopping through the years.

Black Friday is a relatively new thing to most of the world—it’s been an unofficial holiday here for decades, but with the spread of online shopping, it’s now a worldwide thing. For us in the States, it comes around a national holiday, Thanksgiving, which is tomorrow. Before the consumerist extravaganza, we have a single day off—the one biggest holiday that everyone celebrates, regardless of religion.

The earliest European settlers in North America had a feast in the late fall to give thanks to God for the success of their first harvests in the new world. Our trials are different today, but we have no less reason to be grateful for the many blessings and advantages we enjoy.

This has been an especially difficult year, 2020, with the virus and the economy. But, as we’ll talk about in tomorrow’s lesson, successful vaccines have been developed in record time. The end of the pandemic is not here, but it is in sight. It may not always feel like it, but there really has never been a better time in history to be alive. So do keep that in mind—all we have to be grateful for—during the crazy shopping days this week.

And there are all kinds of great Black Friday deals on things that can help improve your life, not only our offers at PlainEnglish.com, but other online courses and trainings. Last year, I signed up for a Black Friday special on a membership that is helping me run my online business. So it’s not all materialistic—though, I must admit, I did just get a new speaker in the mail!
That’s all I have today. Remember we have a few Black Friday specials, which you can find at PlainEnglish.com , or in your email if you’re on our email list. I would love for 2021 to be the year you take a big step in English—and I’d love to be a part of it. Check out our offers at PlainEnglish.com.
