S1 Ep166: Pluspy: The Japanese Car Video That Inspired a Generation

Past Gas

<div>Donut's Nolan Sykes and Joe Weber walk you through incredible stories behind your favorite cars and manufacturers. Episodes include underground Japanese racing clubs, bitter racing rivalries, and how some of your favorite classic cars came to be. Listen and find out why Past Gas is the #1 automotive podcast on Apple.</div>

Twenty years before the launch of YouTube, tuning shops partnered with tuner magazines and illegal street racers in Japan to produce one of the most legendary viral car videos in history. The video would go on to cement careers, create massive media franchises, and ultimately resulted in an entirely new motorsport. And it was all done with one of the most unlikely cars anyone could have imagined at the time - the Toyota AE86. Who is “The Drift King” Keiichi Tsuchiya? How did drifting go from legitimate track technique to illegal underground activity and back to legitimate motorsport? And how did a small series of VHS tapes go on to change the automotive world forever? This is Past Gas - on Keiichi Tsuchiya and Pluspy, the viral car video that inspired a generation.
