#414: Jack Kornfield — How to Find Peace Amidst COVID-19, How to Cultivate Calm in Chaos

The Tim Ferriss Show

Tim Ferriss is a self-experimenter and bestselling author, best known for The 4-Hour Workweek, which has been translated into 40+ languages. Newsweek calls him "the world's best human guinea pig," and The New York Times calls him "a cross between Jack Welch and a Buddhist monk." In this show, he deconstructs world-class performers from eclectic areas (investing, chess, pro sports, etc.), digging deep to find the tools, tactics, and tricks that listeners can use.

Jack Kornfield — How to Find Peace Amidst COVID-19, How to Cultivate Calm in Chaos | Brought to you by <a href="http://freshbooks.com/tim" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FreshBooks</a> and <a href="http://99designs.com/tim" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">99designs</a>."We have the opportunity, even in difficult times, to let our spirit shine." — Jack KornfieldJack Kornfield (<a href="https://twitter.com/JackKornfield" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@JackKornfield</a>) trained as a Buddhist monk in the monasteries of Thailand, India, and Burma, shortly thereafter becoming one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. He has taught meditation internationally since 1974.Jack has had a profound and direct impact on my life, and I'm thrilled to have him on the podcast once again.Jack co-founded the <a href="http://www.dharma.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Insight Meditation Society</a> in Barre, Massachusetts, with fellow meditation teachers <a href="https://tim.blog/2017/11/03/sharon-salzberg/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sharon Salzberg</a> and <a href="http://www.dharma.org/ims/joseph_goldstein.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Joseph Goldstein</a> and the <a href="http://www.spiritrock.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Spirit Rock</a> Center in Woodacre, California. He holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and is a father, husband, and activist.Jack's books have been translated into 20 languages and sold more than a million copies, including <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553382330/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Wise Heart</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1622030966/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">A Lamp in the Darkness</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553372114/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">A Path with Heart</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553378295/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">After the Ecstasy, the Laundry</a> (one of my favorite book titles of all time), and his most recent, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1451693699/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">No Time Like the Present: Finding Freedom, Love, and Joy Right Where You Are</a>. He offers a brilliant online training program for those who want to learn to teach meditation at <a href="https://jackkornfield.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">JackKornfield.com. </a>This episode is more of a personal therapy session for yours truly in some respects. You will notice that I sound anxious and unsure in this interview, and that is very much by design. I think it is unhelpful when people in the public eye hide the fact that they also struggle, and it puts them on this illusory pedestal that I think is ultimately self-defeating. Instead, I want to share with you that no matter how much Stoic philosophy I read, no matter how often I meditate, there are times when I struggle, and this week is one of them.I also hope that you'll listen to portions of this conversation multiple times. There are a number of exercises that Jack shares that I will certainly be listening to in the upcoming weeks. Please enjoy. This episode is brought to you by <a href="http://freshbooks.com/tim" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FreshBooks</a>. I've been talking about <a href="http://freshbooks.com/tim" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FreshBooks</a>—an all-in-one invoicing+payments+accounting solution—for years now.
