#300: Jack Kornfield - Finding Freedom, Love, and Joy in the Present

The Tim Ferriss Show

Tim Ferriss is a self-experimenter and bestselling author, best known for The 4-Hour Workweek, which has been translated into 40+ languages. Newsweek calls him "the world's best human guinea pig," and The New York Times calls him "a cross between Jack Welch and a Buddhist monk." In this show, he deconstructs world-class performers from eclectic areas (investing, chess, pro sports, etc.), digging deep to find the tools, tactics, and tricks that listeners can use.

Jack Kornfield (<a href="https://twitter.com/JackKornfield" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@JackKornfield</a>) trained as a Buddhist monk in the monasteries of Thailand, India, and Burma, shortly thereafter becoming one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. He has taught meditation internationally since 1974.Jack has had a profound and direct impact on my life, and I'm thrilled to finally have him on the podcast to share our history, his incredible stories, and practical tactics and techniques that you can use.Jack co-founded the <a href="http://www.dharma.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Insight Meditation Society</a> in Barre, Massachusetts, with fellow meditation teachers <a href="http://www.sharonsalzberg.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sharon Salzberg</a> and <a href="http://www.dharma.org/ims/joseph_goldstein.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Joseph Goldstein</a> and the <a href="http://www.spiritrock.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Spirit Rock</a> Center in Woodacre, California. He holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and is a father, husband, and activist.Jack's books have been translated into 20 languages and sold more than a million copies, including <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553382330/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Wise Heart</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1622030966/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">A Lamp in the Darkness</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553372114/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">A Path with Heart</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553378295/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">After the Ecstasy, the Laundry</a> (one of my favorite book titles of all time), and his most recent, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1451693699/offsitoftimfe-20" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">No Time Like the Present: Finding Freedom, Love, and Joy Right Where You Are</a>.Enjoy!This podcast is brought to you by <a href="http://foursigmatic.com/ferriss" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Four Sigmatic</a>. While I often praise this company's lion's mane mushroom coffee for a minimal caffeine wakeup call that lasts, I asked the founders if they could help me -- someone who's struggled with insomnia for decades -- improve my sleep. Their answer: Reishi Mushroom Elixir. They made a special batch for me and my listeners that comes without sweetener; you can try it at bedtime with a little honey or nut milk, or you can just add hot water to your single-serving packet and embrace its bitterness like I do.Try it right now by going to <a href="http://foursigmatic.com/ferriss" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">foursigmatic.com/ferriss</a> and using the code Ferriss to get 20 percent off this rare, limited run of Reishi Mushroom Elixir. If you are in the experimental mindset, I do not think you'll be disappointed. This podcast is also brought to you by <a href="https://www.freshbooks.com/pages/tim?ref=11864&utm_source=tim-ferriss&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=2016&utm_content=email" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FreshBooks</a>. FreshBooks is the #1 cloud bookkeeping software, which is used by a ton of the start-ups I advise and many of the contractors I work with.
