What if a bipolar diagnosis is not the end of the story, but the beginning? Filmmaker Ross McKenzie spent more than twenty years finding out. In this episode of Talks 21, I sit down with Ross McKenzie, a Canadian filmmaker and co-creator of the documentary Bipolarized. More than thirty years ago, at the age of twenty-one, Ross experienced what he describes as a spiritual emergency. This led to hospitalisation, a bipolar diagnosis, and eighteen years on lithium – and ultimately to a twenty-year journey to understand what had really happened to him. Today, he works as a life coach, helping others look beyond their symptoms to uncover their root causes. In this episode, we discuss: 🔹 What Ross calls becoming "the CEO of your own healthcare," and why this path requires patience, support, and guidance from people with real expertise. 🔹 The role of medication, why it can be essential in stabilising extreme states, but why, in Ross's view, it is only part of the answer. 🔹 Resilience, shadow work, and why the hardest moments in life may carry more meaning than we initially realise. 🔗 If you would like to learn more about Ross's work and his documentary Bipolarized, you can find them at rossmckenzie.com.
