#46 "...the Czechs are strong, hardworking people..." About the Czechoslovak heritage in Texas in the words of Jared Cookston

🎙️ Epimoniac is a podcast about Czechs (Czechoslovaks) – and their descendants – living all around the world. My name is Alena Cicakova, and I talk with people who share their own definition of what it means to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – whether at home or abroad.🌍 The word epimoni comes from Greek and means perseverance – the ability to keep going even in difficult times. This very quality connects the stories you’ll hear on the podcast – from starting out in a new country, building businesses, or pursuing science and the arts, to finding balance while living between two or more cultures.✨ Epimoniac is not just about inspiring conversations. It’s about finding what connects Czechs at home with communities abroad – across generations and continents. About the collaboration that emerges when the experience of those who grew up abroad meets those still searching for their place back home. About building bridges between communities and the overlaps that arise when different cultures, languages, and life paths meet.

Recently, a friend of mine has said that Czech was pretty much a useless language. Noone outside our country speaks it. Well, be it as it may, to me even because of that, it is all the more valuable. What a surprise it was to learn, that this language was at some point the third most spoken language in Texas, USA! Jared Cookston is a young Texan with Czech ancestry. Jared's social media initiative, living_the_texczech_life, has a large following. He knows that there is a strong connection between the Czechs in Europe and the Czechoslovak community in Texas. And not only through keeping up with the traditions. What motivated Jared though to start this initiative? How big and active the Czechoslovak community is over in Texas? How has it changed throughout the years? Do they still speak Czech? And how is the Czechoslovak heritage perceived? Let me know, how did you like it.Please share the episode with friends.
