"I didn´t know I would succeed, and feared I would fail. But because I tried, a breakthrough happened," says Barry Barish. The breakthrough in question was opening up new opportunities for space research. In 2017, his contribution to the LIGO detector which detected gravitational waves was recognised by the Nobel Prize in Physics. How did he secure money for a project which wasn’t expected to bring results until the next generation of scientists? How did the new technology help in other fields? And how was he influenced by one of the most prominent physicists in history Richard Feynman with whom he used to have lunch?
