O AUTOROVI 
Olivier Sibony (*1967) je univerzitní profesor, spisovatel a poradce specializující se na kvalitu strategického myšlení a rozhodovací procesy. Pětadvacet let působil jako konzultant McKinsey & Company v Paříži a New Yorku, na mezinárodní škole HEC učí firemní strategii, komunikaci a rozhodování problémů. Mimo jiné je také docentem Saïd Business School na Oxfordské univerzitě.

Touch of Death

The eighth step into the Darkness takes place on the American side of the Atlantic. It features two short stories by a single author – Texas native Robert Ervin Howard. Sadly enough, Howard died at age 30, but he still managed to create several immortal heroes – and was one of the founders of the now popular genre of heroic fantasy (along with J. R. R. Tolkien). R. E. Howard created Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, and Solomon Kane. Together with H. P. Lovecraft and others, R. E. Howard was one of the most prominent purveyors of the Cthulhu Mythos (the best-known contemporary author of this fictional mythology is Stephen King). The Horror from the Mound, and The Fearsome Touch of Death, are excellent even by today’s standards – and the stories are further highlighted by incredible vocal performances, stunning music, and superb graphics on the cover.

Planes of Existence

The fifth step into the Darkness is called Planes of Existence, and it is a solo ride by the feature author of the whole series in three parts. In them, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, practically unread and unknown during his life, but a source of inspiration after his death thanks to friends and devoted fans, deals with the clash of two worlds – the reality and “beyond”. Beyond the Wall of Sleep is a short story from 1919 based on the innovative (at that time) idea of using psychology for explaining real-life issues. Incidentally, a near namesake song (Behind the Wall of Sleep) appeared on the debut album of Black Sabbath, and it should come as no surprise that it was inspired by this short story. The second story, From Beyond (written in 1920, published in 1934), hovers around the theme of a mad scientist willing to peek beyond reality. It inspired a few films, songs by death-metal bands, and it even features in the PC game, Half-Life. The last story of the trio is The Transition of Juan Romero, from 1919, originally written for a limited circle of friends and published after Lovecraft’s death. The feature “character” is a mysterious evil encountered in an ancient ritual to the Mexican deity, Huitzilopochtli. All three short stories are dense with dramatic build-up, thanks to superb performances by the actors and highly atmospheric music. Original graphics on the cover complete the package.

Sounds in the Dark

The third step into the Darkness is called Sounds in the Dark. It begins with a short story written in 1921 by American master horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft called The Music of Erich Zann. The author himself considered the story to be one of his masterpieces, and it is often deservedly included in various horror-story collections. The second short story was written by Bram Stoker. Indeed, THAT Stoker who wrote the epistolary novel Dracula – the very first novel that dealt with a vampire legend. The Judge’s House (written in 1914) completes the collection, and its strongest point is building the atmosphere of fear, which is underlined by excellent voices and music.

The Canterville Ghost

The Otis family move into a haunted house, Canterville Chase. The resident ghost, Sir Simon de Canterville killed his wife there in 1575 and his guilt causes him to haunt the house. Sir Simon haunts with different coloured bloodstains, which appear on the floor everyday. It is all to no avail as nothing frightens the Otis family. Virginia Otis feels sorry for Sir Simon and when he tells her that his wife's death was an accident and how he is very unhappy and lonely, she is reduced to tears...

Murderers

The fourth step into the Darkness is called Murderers, and it takes the listener into the realm of vampire stories and haunted houses. The first – The Tomb of Sara – was written by English navy officer, and writer, Frederick George Loring. It was one of the very first stories from the last century featuring a lady vampire. The feminine element represents the connection with Luella Miller by Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman. The inhabitant of a haunted house sucks life out of everyone who gets interested in her – and the atmosphere gets denser throughout the story. This relatively short story is incredibly touching, and you will remember it for a long time. The atmosphere builds up thanks to well-chosen voices, music, and graphics.

Stories of Sherlock Holmes

In the Boscombe Valley Mystery, Turner kills his blackmailer McCarthy to prevent McCarthy's son marrying his daughter and claiming all of his property. In the Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, Holmes foils Mr Ryder's plans to steal a precious jewel and frame a plumber for the crime. The Adventure of Silver Blaze tells of how a trainer tries to injure his horse in order to win a bet, but is killed when the horse fights back! In the Adventure of the Copper Beeches a selfish father traps his daughter so he will not lose her money. His plan is foiled when his daughter's love rescues her.
